A black and white dancer study — process and form

Study

A fourteen-week one-on-one mentorship for photographers ready to define a body of work and see it through.

The premise

Most photography instruction teaches technique. This is something else.

Study is a structured, one-on-one collaboration built around a single outcome: a complete, considered ten-image series you're proud to put in front of clients, galleries, or editors — the same process behind Thresholds and the Tiffany Study.

Over fourteen weeks, you bring the ambition. I bring forty-five years behind a camera, five years running an editorial and commercial studio, and nineteen years learning — as a data scientist — how to find the signal that actually matters inside a lot of noise. You won't get cheerleading. You'll get a direct, working-photographer's read on what's working, what isn't, and why.

Who this is for

Study is built for photographers who already shoot — who have a camera, a body of work in progress, or at least the beginnings of one — and who are ready to commit to a single project over fourteen weeks rather than collect more techniques. It's not a class. I'm not assigning your project; you are. My role is to help you see it clearly and finish it well.

How it works

PHASE 1 — WEEK 1 · THE PROJECT DEFINED

The project, defined

You bring three ideas. We test each one against three questions: can it be made with what you already have, does it stretch you, and is it strong enough to stand as a series? One idea becomes your project.

PHASE 2 — WEEKS 2–6 · EARLY BUILDS

Early builds

Biweekly sessions track the series as it takes shape. Each one ends with a specific assignment. You shoot, I review before you return.

PHASE 3 — WEEK 7 · THE DIP

The dip

By now you've made twenty-plus images, and some of them won't feel like the project anymore. That's not a setback — it means your eye is sharpening. We sort what's working from what isn't.

PHASE 4 — WEEKS 8–12 · THE GRIND

The grind

The series is taking shape. Critique shifts from technique to whether every image is earning its place. Sessions get harder as the work gets closer to finished.

PHASE 5 — WEEK 13 · PRE-REVIEW

Pre-review

You submit a draft final ten plus your artist statement. We confirm the selection together before the closing session.

PHASE 6 — WEEK 14 · FINAL REVIEW

Final review

You walk me through your finished ten images. I deliver a written review you keep. We talk about what the work says — and where it points next.
